A child's accident protection isn't a single decision – it's a handful of small moves repeated every year. This checklist gives you the parental routine: a quarter-hour at the start of the school year, and the system holds for the rest of it. Background articles: accident insurance for children and the sporty child.
In short:- The three layers: the school package + club cover + the family policy – go through all three once.
- The best timing: the start of the school year – that's when all the information is fresh and easy to get.
- At the end of the list, the claim routine: what to do if it happens anyway.
Block 1: the school layer (at the start of the school year)
- ☐ Ask the school: is there group accident insurance, and request its terms or a summary.
- ☐ Skim through: what amounts apply, what it covers (time and place: only on school premises and hours, or beyond?).
- ☐ Clarify whether field trips, camps, swimming lessons are included in the cover.
- ☐ Note down: who to turn to for an accident at school (per the student article, the school handles documentation).
Block 2: the sport layer (at registration, at the start of the season)
- ☐ If your child is a club athlete: ask what the sport club's insurance covers.
- ☐ Make sure the fact of competing is disclosed on the family policy – without this, cover can be incomplete.
- ☐ A training camp or competition abroad? – extend your travel cover to the sport.
- ☐ If your child switches sport: update the disclosure.
Block 3: the family layer (once a year)
- ☐ The child is included on the family policy (or has their own cover) – any new sibling too!
- ☐ The permanent disability amount is at a meaningful level – this is the heart of a child's cover.
- ☐ Fracture, hospital, surgical elements: in place – the hospital element is also worth having because of parents staying over with the child.
- ☐ The cover is year-round and around the clock – it applies to holidays and weekends too.
Block 4: the claim routine (if it happens)
- ☐ Get treatment – describe exactly what happened (make sure the mechanism ends up on paper).
- ☐ For a school or club accident: request their documentation.
- ☐ Report it at every layer involved: school + club + family policy – fixed amounts are paid alongside each other.
- ☐ From here, follow the claim reporting checklist.
