Good accident insurance doesn't start with a product – it starts with questions. The needs assessment is the 20 minutes in which your situation shows what's worth covering and for how much – before any insurer's name even comes up. This article shows you what happens at that meeting, so you don't walk in blind.
The starting point is a map of the family (or team): how many earners, how many children, whose income the household depends on, whether there's a single point of dependency. This decides the casting – who needs cover of what weight: following the logic of the family approach, earners get income-protecting amounts, children get amounts focused on permanent disability.
The risk profile rests on two pillars: what people actually do for work (the real day-to-day tasks – the basis for occupational classification) and what sports they play (hobby, regular, competitive – following the sport levels). This is where the most important sentence of the assessment gets said: tell me everything, honestly – the goal isn't to optimise the premium, it's to avoid a dispute at claim time.
The stocktake: workplace group cover, a school policy, a bank-card add-on package, old riders – and the state of your savings buffer. Mapping the existing layers matters for two reasons: it's a waste to pay for overlapping cover, and the real gaps only become visible this way. If there's an old policy, the review happens right here.
The closing round is a calculation: how big a gap would a longer period off work leave (the logic of the social-security gap), and which amounts would cover it – element by element: daily benefit for the weeks, a permanent-disability amount for the long term, a death benefit sized to the family's situation. The method is set out in the sizing article; at the assessment, it's run through with your own numbers.
A sizing plan – not a product pitch: what to cover, for whom, at what amount, with which extensions worth requesting. That's what we then use to request competing quotes from several insurers, and the result arrives as the comparison table. If the assessment shows that you don't need a policy right now – build up savings first, or another kind of protection first – I'll say that too, following the honesty article. The 20 minutes are free, with no obligation – and it works the same way for a company team, with a focus on headcount and activities.
